California New-Baby Paperwork: SDI, PFL, and Every Key Date

2 min read

California parents are covered by the most generous (and most bureaucratic) leave system in the country. Here's how the pieces fit, and where families most often leave money unclaimed.

The three-program stack

  • SDI (State Disability Insurance) pays the birth parent a portion of wages during pregnancy and childbirth recovery. Typically up to 4 weeks before the due date and 6–8 weeks after delivery, per your provider's certification.
  • PFL (Paid Family Leave) then pays up to 8 weeks of bonding benefits. And here's the part many families miss: each parent has their own 8 weeks, at any employer size, usable any time in the baby's first year.
  • CFRA provides the job protection. Up to 12 weeks of protected bonding leave at employers with just 5+ employees. Many Californians who fail the federal FMLA's 50-employee test are still protected under state law.

The filing windows are real

SDI claims must be filed no later than 49 days after your disability begins. PFL claims: no later than 41 days after your family leave starts. Late filings can forfeit benefits.

Where the money gets left behind

1. The SDI→PFL handoff. When recovery ends, PFL doesn't start itself, you file for it. The seam between the two claims is where weeks of benefits silently go unclaimed.
2. The partner's claim. Non-birthing partners routinely never learn they have their own 8 weeks. It's a separate claim, in their own EDD account, with its own window.
3. Employer voluntary plans. Some California employers run approved private plans instead of state SDI. Your claims then go through the employer's plan, not the EDD.

Do now, while pregnant: create your myEDD account, tell your provider's office you'll be filing (they certify claims electronically), and confirm with HR whether you're on the state plan or a voluntary plan.

The rest of the checklist. The 30-day insurance window, SSN, birth certificate, FSA election, beneficiaries. Applies in California like everywhere else, each with its own clock.

Mothers Plan turns all of it into your dated timeline. SDI and PFL filings sequenced with reminders, the handoff task at the right week, and your partner's claim on their own list. Built from ten questions about your family. See your timeline free.
