Leave notice is one of the most misunderstood steps in pregnancy planning at work. Most families treat it as the pregnancy announcement. It is not. Under federal law, it is a narrow, specific act: telling an employer that FMLA-qualifying leave will be needed, with enough information and enough lead time for the employer to plan. The law asks for less than most people assume. Getting the notice right protects the leave. Getting the timing right protects everything else.
