Reading an Explanation of Benefits

After a birth, a stack of paper starts arriving from the health plan. Each document is an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB: a line-by-line report of what was billed, what the plan paid, and what remains. It is not a bill. It is a claims report. But it is also the first place an error becomes visible, weeks before a bill arrives. Families who read these documents catch overcharges, duplicates, and misapplied deductibles. Families who file them unopened pay whatever the bill says. The difference is one careful read per document.
