Self-Employed and Having a Baby

Part of the Learning Center · included with every paid plan

The self-employed parent has no employer leave policy, no HR department to file with, and no disability plan waiting in a benefits portal. Every program described in a standard parental leave guide starts with the words "eligible employees." That leaves the freelancer, the sole proprietor, and the independent contractor to build their own version of what W-2 workers receive automatically. The gap is real, but it is not as wide as it first appears. Several states let self-employed workers opt into paid leave programs, estimated taxes adjust for income changes, and a coverage-gap plan assembled during pregnancy holds together far better than one assembled in the postpartum weeks.
